St. Paul schools to give out free summer meals in food truck

St. Paul Public Schools is putting a food truck to service as part of its free summer meals program.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the truck will start handing out meals June 15, with nine daily stops planned. Anyone younger than 19 can get the summer meals for free.

The school district bought the food truck last year as it seeks to increase participation in the federally funded summer program.

District official Monica McNaughton says about 80 percent of students eat school lunch during the school year, but only 20 percent take the free meals offered during the summer.

McNaughton says she hopes the truck will eventually serve as many as 1,500 meals a day.
