Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" hit No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart 50 years ago today.
It was the duo's first hit and became their signature song.
Cher recently told Billboard magazine how difficult their careers had been before this song came out. "We struggled and struggled and struggled because of the way we looked, " she said. "And people didn't get it until we went to England and then came back and they thought we were English. But I mean, we looked different than anyone else. We got thrown out of every place." That didn't happen after this song came out.
