Mystic Lake Casino Hotel has announced plans to add a second hotel and convention center to its entertainment complex near Prior Lake.

Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and Mystic Lake officials said Tuesday that construction is scheduled to begin next April and wrap up by the end of 2017. Existing hotel rooms also are being remodeled and are expected to be completed within the next few months.

The new nine-story hotel tower will feature 180 additional rooms, while the new 70,000-square-foot convention center will contain two large ballrooms and several smaller meeting rooms.

With the expansion, Mystic Lake will become the fourth-largest hotel conferencing center in the Twin Cities metro area.

The casino opened in 1992, followed by the first hotel and convention center in 1996.
