Today's Morning Edition music is from 80 years ago Monday. That's when 13-year-old Frances Gumm, who had just started using the stage name Judy Garland, was introduced to a national audience for the first time.
She appeared on the "Shell Chateau Hour" radio program and sang "Broadway Rhythm."
Garland was born in Grand Rapids, Minn., in 1922. Her family moved to California four years later. She performed on the vaudeville circuit with her sisters before signing a contract with MGM and landing the role of Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz."
