Three years ago, Robert Cattanach was out for a bike ride when his front wheel caught in a gap in the concrete at a railroad crossing in St. Paul Park.
He was thrown from his bike; he broke his collarbone and injured his neck.
Last month, a judge ruled that Cattanach can move forward with his lawsuit against BNSF, the owner of the tracks at the center of the accident. BNSF is the largest railroad company in the country. Cattanach is asking for more than $350,000 in damages, the Star Tribune reported.
Cattanach joined MPR News' Tom Weber to discuss the lawsuit and the responsibility of railroads to keep crossings safe for bikers.
After the interview, Cattanach had a spark of inspiration about how bikers, drivers and everyone on the road could make an effort to get along.
