Today's Morning Edition music is Starship's "We Built This City," which was No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart 30 years ago today.
It was the first single by Starship. The band's name was created after a lawsuit involving former members of Jefferson Starship. That band was formed by former members of Jefferson Airplane.
Several polls and lists have deemed "We Built This City" one of the worst songs of all time. "It purports to be anti-commercial but reeks of '80s corporate-rock commercialism," wrote an editor of Blender magazine. "It's a real reflection of what practically killed rock music in the '80s."
