Schools in Menomonie, Wis., are planning to cancel classes Wednesday because of a threat of a shooting.
School officials told parents Friday of the threat, and sent letters to families over the weekend outlining the district's response. District administrator Joe Zydowsky said it is unusual to have so much advanced warning but that he felt the threat couldn't be discounted.
"Threats are difficult to deal with pretty much no matter what the circumstances are," he said. "This is a little bit unique, having a specific date. However, this has been going on for years in schools, whether it be bomb threats, whether it be threats of shootings or other violence. And, no matter what happens, we need to place the greatest emphasis on the safety of our staff and students."
Menomonie High School has about 1,000 students and more than 100 staff. Zydowsky said the district is also stepping up security in response to the potential threat. He also encouraged parents to talk with their children and report any relevant information to authorities.
