Transgender actress in Lou Reed song dies

Today's Morning Edition music is based on a transgender actress, who was made famous in the opening lines of a song by Lou Reed. She has died.

Holly Woodlawn passed away Sunday in Los Angeles at the age of 69. She had been battling cancer.

Woodlawn appeared in films like "Trash" and "Women in Revolt." More recently she had a part in the TV series "Transparent."

Woodlawn ran away from her Florida home as a teenager and hitchhiked to New York City, where she became one of the artists, socialites and hedonists who hung out at Andy Warhol's Factory in the 1960s and '70s.
