With warm temperatures in the Twin Cities making more rain than ice, the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships have been pushed back two weeks. Organizers now plan to be on Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis Jan. 28 to 31.
Tournament officials said in a statement they've been monitoring the ice on Nokomis and that current conditions make it unsafe to hold the event on the original dates, Jan. 14 to 17. "Our goal is to provide the absolute best pond hockey tournament in the world. We believe that by moving the date, we will be able to accomplish this," the group said.
"We've had to make adjustments in the past for a day or two of competition, but the event has never been completely canceled. No one wants to see that happen," Jim Dahline, director of marketing for the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships, told MPR News Meteorologist Paul Huttner recently.
The separate North American Pond Hockey Championship is still scheduled for Jan. 21 to 24 on Lake Minnetonka.
