Family of 4 identified as victims in Aitkin County crash

Authorities have identified four people who were killed in an icy highway crash in northeastern Minnesota this weekend as a family of four.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Saturday in Aitkin County when the four people in a Mazda SUV collided with a Chevrolet Suburban heading the opposite direction on Highway 65. The Minnesota State Patrol said the highway was icy at the time.

The State Patrol identified the family as Christopher and Rae Moe and their 14-year-old daughter, Samantha, and 12-year-old son, Anthony. The family was from Columbia Heights.

"Certainly the roads were not in good condition and we always look to determine if the drivers were driving too fast for conditions and we don't know that yet," said Lt. Tiffani Nelson of the state patrol. She said neither driver had been drinking alcohol.

Nielson says three of the five people in the SUV suffered serious injuries.

The crash was one of more than 150 accidents reported statewide on Saturday as more than 3 inches of snow fell in the Twin Cities Metro.
