Wisconsin mayor who called Obama a Muslim visits mosque

The mayor of a northern Wisconsin city who came under fire for calling President Barack Obama a Muslim was the guest of honor at a community meal hosted by the Islamic Center of the Twin Ports.

WDIO-TV reports about 100 Muslims welcomed Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen, several city councilors and others to their mosque for a potluck on Saturday.

Hagen drew protests and calls for his resignation last month after he posted on Facebook that Obama is a Muslim who has "destroyed the fabric of democracy." He issued an apology Friday.

Ibrahim Al-Qudah, the president of the Islamic Center of the Twin Ports, says sitting down together for the meal was a way to ease tensions and clear up misunderstandings.

The mayor declined to be interviewed at the event.
