Today's Morning Edition music is from "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers, which was No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart 40 years ago Thursday.

The Scottish band was a worldwide sensation for a brief time in the mid-1970s. That inspired Nick Lowe to write a song about their fans called "Bay City Rollers We Love You."

It was designed to be so bad that it would get him out of a recording contract with United Artists, but instead became a big hit in Japan.

In response, Lowe wrote another song about Rollers fans, which appeared on his first solo album.
