U.S. Bank is donating $700,000 to seed a college scholarship program for African-American students in the Twin Cities.
The program will be administered in partnership with the United Negro College Fund. It will get going early this summer, identifying financially-needy African-American high school juniors who have not yet shown their full academic potential.
"These are kids who may have some trepidation about college or taking the ACT exam," said Greg Cunningham, a U.S. Bank vice president. "We want to give these kids one-on-one academic mentoring and preparation."
The program could serve about 100 students, but U.S. Bank and the UNCF are encouraging others to contribute funding to expand the program.
"This is a very intentional program to identify capable kids who may not have yet demonstrated exceptional talent and ability but who are worthy of investment and who will produce strong results if invested in," said Michael Lomax, UNCF president.
