Mpls. school board hires new superintendent search firm

The Minneapolis school board has hired a new search firm to help find the district's next superintendent.

The last headhunting consultant failed to find information that would later scuttle the chances of previous choice Sergio Paez.

The board canceled contract talks with Paez in January after allegations surfaced of severe physical abuse of special needs students at a school in his old district in Massachusetts.

On Tuesday night, the school board voted to pay DHR International up to $85,000 to find and vet candidates. Chairperson Jenny Arneson said a separate consultant will handle community engagement sessions.

"As names emerge we want to make sure that there's a thorough process where people can meet potential candidates and give feedback to our board as we make decisions," she said.

Arneson said the district is still trying to get a refund from the previous headhunter, HYA.

The school board is aiming to have a new superintendent hired by early summer.
