We had a quick inch or two of snow early this morning over much of the Twin Cities metro area, and many roads are slippery. Be careful if you are driving this Saturday morning, and allow extra travel time. Slippery roads are also being reported over southern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin this morning.
Periods of light snow are possible into early this afternoon in the Twin Cities. Over far southern Minnesota, periods of snow continue into mid afternoon, with some additional accumulation.
Our Saturday highs will be slightly cooler than normal:
On Sunday we expect a cloud/sun mix, with slightly warmer highs:

March is third snowiest
March snow should not be a big surprise in Minnesota. In the Twin Cities, March is our third snowiest month, with an average of 10.3 inches. January is our snowiest month, with an average of 12.2 inches. Our second snowiest month is December, with an average of 11.9 inches.
The monthly snowfall averages are based on the 30 year period from 1981 to 2010. Every 10 years, climatologists update the averages for a new 30 year period which includes the most recent 10 years.
Looking for 50
Looking ahead, temps warm into the upper 40s on Monday and lower 50s on Tuesday:
From Wednesday into early Thursday, a low pressure system tracks from southern Iowa into Illinois. It will spread moisture over southern Minnesota and southern Wisconsin, possibly in the form of a rain/snow mix. If enough cold air is pulled into the system, we could have some heavy wet snow over southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities. That is several days away, and we will fine tune that forecast as we get closer to Wednesday.
Spring begins!
Astronomical Spring begins at 1130 pm CDT tonight. It is called the vernal equinox, and Sunday will be our first full day of Spring.
