Several Minnesota students are preparing like crazy right now because they're headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. next month.
That national bee started in 1925. More than 11 million students across the country were expected to take part in bees this school year for a chance to be part of that competition.
Those who reach the national bee have won at the regional level. Here in Minnesota, this year's Metro Area Regional Spelling Bee was held last month at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. This regional bee was open to students grades four through eight in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties. Minnesota Public Radio was the sponsor.
We broadcast highlights of the event.
