2014 marked the 30th anniversary of "Purple Rain" — both the album and film. To celebrate the occasion, MPR News and The Current produced a documentary about the making of the movie that put Minneapolis on the music map.
Directed by Albert Magnoli, "Purple Rain" was a rock musical that gave Prince fans a visual reference to the songs they loved from the album. The documentary features interviews with some of the names behind the film, including co-star Apollonia Kotero and Bobby Z, drummer for the Revolution.
As fans celebrate Prince's life and legacy, this documentary explores how "Purple Rain" became an important part of Minnesota culture.
