Scattered showers possible today; 60s to 70s this week

A weak cool front will slide through Minnesota today and it could trigger a few scattered showers. In the Twin Cities, there is a chance of a late morning or afternoon shower:

Highs in the 60s will be common over central and southern Minnesota, with 50s over the north.

Severe weather southern U.S.

The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a chance of severe thunderstorms over parts of Oklahoma, Texas, southeastern Colorado and southern Kansas today and tonight:

Far southeastern Minnesota could see an isolated thunderstorm later today, but severe weather is not expected.

Cool north tonight

With high pressure spreading across Minnesota tonight, winds will be very light. That will allow temperatures to drop into the 30s over northern Minnesota, and parts of central Minnesota, by Tuesday morning:

Southern Minnesota should see lows in the lower 40s.

Bright Tuesday

There will be plenty of sunshine on Tuesday, with highs in the 60s for most Minnesotans:

Highs in the 50s are expected for parts of northeastern Minnesota.

We could hit 70 in the Twin Cities on Wednesday, and highs in the lower 70s are in our forecast for Thursday and Friday. Highs this coming Saturday and Sunday could reach the mid or upper 70s.

Cold fishing opener

It was windy and cold for our Minnesota fishing opener on Saturday. The low temperature Saturday in International Falls was 28 degrees, and they had a morning wind chill temperature of 17 degrees! In the Twin Cities, our official Saturday morning low was 34 degrees, with a morning wind chill of 24 degrees.

We've had colder temperatures for the fishing opener, according to the Minnesota State Climatology Office. Low temperatures at International Falls dropped to 24 degrees for the fishing openers in 1996 and 2004!  In the Twin Cities, we had a low of 31 degrees the morning of the fishing opener in 1979.
