Once inside, they encountered a man in a bedroom who shot at the officers, according to a statement from police. One or more officers returned fire.
Paramedics from the St. Paul Fire Department pronounced the man dead. He was not transported to a hospital.
No officers were hurt in what was "a very dangerous situation," said Steve Linders, St. Paul Police spokesperson.
Tom Christopherson, who lives in the area, said he heard two to three shots, then a pause, then five more. "Then I saw a girl crying, being put in the back of the squad."
Christopherson said he did not hear yelling or commotion before the gun shots, in what he describes as a quiet neighborhood.
Antonio Brown said he was meeting his girlfriend in an alley to walk their dog, when he heard the shots. He said he didn't know the man, but the house where the shooting happened had a lot of activity.
"I heard talk that the police were watching the house and watching people coming in and out," Brown said.
St. Paul police said the incident is being investigated and that further updates will come from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
