Cool with scattered showers today; some Sunday sun

It's the weekend, so a lot of us have outdoor plans. I wish that I could give you a completely dry forecast, but I cannot.

A pesky low pressure system over eastern Minnesota this Saturday morning will move slowly away over the next 12-18 hours. We'll see scattered showers at times today, and an isolated thunderstorm is also possible.

Here is the forecast rainfall pattern, today through Sunday, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale Forecast System (NAM):

Most of us won't see any rain on Sunday, but an isolated shower will be possible Sunday afternoon or evening over eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Severe weather is not expected in Minnesota today, and the strongest thunderstorms will be concentrated near the Ohio river valley.

The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a slight risk of severe weather today and tonight for those areas:

Friday tornado report

There were some funnel cloud sightings late Friday afternoon in central Minnesota, and one tornado touchdown was reported by the public. The tornado touchdown report came from St. Martin, in Stearns County, at 5:25 pm. The Storm Prediction Center posted this report of the tornado incident:

PORTION OF TURKEY BARN ROOF TORN AWAY. LARGE PINE TREE SEVERED APPROXIMATELY 10 FEET OFF THE GROUND. TIME ESTIMATED. (MPX)

Typically, a National Weather Service storm survey team will visit the site of a suspected tornado touchdown,  and file a report to confirm the damage and estimate the tornado's strength.

Cool today, milder Sunday

High temperatures will be in the 60s over much of Minnesota today, with some upper 50s over northeastern Minnesota. Some spots in southern Minnesota should hit 70, including many locations in the Twin Cities.

It gets better.

70s will be very common on Sunday:

A few spots in western Minnesota could pop into the lower 80s Sunday afternoon.

Monday and Tuesday look cool, with highs in the lower 70s, but highs in the 80s are expected on Thursday and Friday in the Twin Cities. We have a shot at 90 next Saturday!
