Minnesota Highway 5 will be completely closed this weekend between St. Paul and Fort Snelling, shutting a key Mississippi River bridge crossing.
The highway will close Friday at 8 p.m. between Highway 55 and Davern Street, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said Wednesday. All Highway 5 ramps in the project area will close at 7 p.m. It's all expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
Eastbound Highway 5 drivers will be detoured to eastbound Minnesota Highway 55, eastbound Minnesota Highway 110 and northbound Interstate 35E, MnDOT said. Those trying to go westbound on Highway 5 will be detoured to southbound I-35E, westbound Minnesota Highway 110 and westbound Highway 55.
Officials said the road must be closed so crews can pour concrete to form the new westbound Highway 5 bridge deck and paint sections of the bridge. It's part of a two-year project that includes reconstructing the Highway 5 bridge deck.
