Daily Digest: Dayton ponders race

Happy Friday. This has been a tough week. Another day, another city in mourning. Here’s the digest:

1. Gov. Mark Dayton is requesting a federal investigation of the police shooting that claimed the life of Philando Castile. Dayton said he was “shocked and horrified” by the shooting. He also said he believes race was a factor. (MPR News)

2. President Obama said the Castile shooting, along with this week’s shooting death in Louisiana, are not isolated incidents. He called on law enforcement to root out bias. (AP)

3. Obama later reacted to the killing of five police officers in Dallas. He called the attack “vicious, calculated and despicable.” (Washington Post)

4. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was in Washington to meet with top GOP lawmakers. His meeting with Senate Republicans was described as “tense.” (New York Times)

5. A broken water valve caused a big mess inside the building that houses Minnesota state lawmakers’ offices. (StarTribune)
