This week on Art Hounds: DJ Rekha, Circus Juventas and a vintage band festival.
Children's Theatre Company staffer Sam Segal is going to the Cedar Cultural Center Friday night to take in the rhythms of Bhangra music, as spun by DJ Rekha. New York-based Rekha combines Bollywood music with Punjabi folk and contemporary electronic dance music. Presented by the Cedar and Ragamala Dance Company, Segal says the evening will begin with dance lessons for the uninitiated.
Jon Lewis, executive director of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, is really looking forward to Circus Juventas' latest production, "Wonderland." Circus Juventas trains youth in acrobatics, aerial work and other physical feats — think Cirque du Soleil for young people. Lewis says it should be a fantastic trip down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass. The show runs through Aug. 14.
Radio DJ Jessica Paxton is a big fan of the annual Vintage Band Festival in Northfield, Minn. The festival takes place every three years, and features 30 bands performing 100 concerts in just four days. The festival takes over Northfield parks, churches, bars and other community spaces; attendees are encouraged to dress in vintage clothing as they take in the all the trumpets and drums.
Correction (July 28, 2016): An earlier version of this story misidentified the name of the Circus Juventas show. The story has been updated.
