Today's Morning Edition music is from James Taylor with "You've Got a Friend," which was No. 1 in the U.S. 45 years ago.

The song was written by Carole King who said, "The song was as close to pure inspiration as I've ever experienced. ... It was written by something outside of myself, but through me."

She recorded a version too. But this is the one that took off. Taylor won a Grammy for best male pop vocal performance, while King took home the Grammy for song of the year.
