The victim, Eric Nelson, was identified Tuesday, by his family and Princeton Schools Superintendent Julia Espe. He was an eighth-grader at Princeton Middle School.
Police have provided few details about the shooting.
Eric's mother, Laurie Blegen-Nelson, says her son was a strong-willed kid with a big heart who loves his three siblings "more than life itself."
The superintendent says Eric was well-liked by his peers, helpful and kind with a great sense of humor. She says students and staff are devastated.
Princeton is about 50 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
