It's too nice to eat indoors.

It's far too crummy here for most of the year for Minnesotans to not dine outdoors as much as possible in the warmer months.

Thankfully, that time of year is here. Al fresco expert and Minnesota Monthly editor Rachel Hutton has a comprehensive list of the best outdoor eats.

There's a theme to Hutton's picks: they're all by water. Here's a few of her favorite spots:

Grandma's — Duluth: This Canal Park spot has a roof deck from which you can watch Lake Superior ships go under the lift bridge while enjoying a fine roast beef sandwich.

At Sara's Table Chester Creek Cafe — Duluth: While it's not right on the great lake, the cafe's location on a hilltop offers a panoramic view of the Lake Superior waterfront. It was also a pioneer of local, sustainable dining.

Angry Trout Cafe — Grand Marais: Farther up the North Shore, this eco-friendly restaurant has a big wooden deck right on Lake Superior. Visit for fresh fish including lake trout, herring and whitefish right out of Superior.

Bar Harbor — Upper Gull Lake: Head to the Brainerd lakes area for this longtime supper club. The spot used to be a bar and casino, but now it's a modern steak and seafood joint that hosts a classic boat show each summer.

Marine Landing b.o.t.m. — Marine on St. Croix: Located on a small marina, it's easier to get to this restaurant if you arrive by boat. The acronym in the restaurant's name stands for back on the map, and that's what the spot has done for the area with its homey breakfasts and lunches.

Nosh — Lake City: For an elegant menu with local, seasonal options, snag a spot on Nosh's roof deck, which overlooks the harbor.
