The American Academy of Pediatrics updated its guidelines this year to recommend screening for depression in all kids 12 years or older.
This change comes on the heels of research that showed up to two thirds of kids with depression were never diagnosed by their primary care physician — and because of that, they also missed out on proper treatment.
MPR News host Kerri Miller spoke with two physicians about the new guidelines and what signs parents should look out for in their own children:
• Dr. Laura Richardson, pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital and professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine
• Dr. Gregory Plemmons, associate professor of clinical pediatrics at Vanderbilt University
