Bassist Drew Miller of Boiled in Lead is thrilled to see the band Spiro in its first-ever U.S. tour this Sunday at Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. He says the acoustic instrumental quartet is greatly influenced by contemporary minimalist and electronic music, but its approach is completely live — no over-dubbing or multi-tracking.

Cabaret singer Oron Stenesh is a huge fan of performance artist Erin Markey, who has made a name for herself on the East Coast by blending pop music and storytelling with a peculiar sense of humor. Much of her work draws on her childhood in Michigan. She performs with bandmate Emily Bate on Sept. 26 at Amsterdam Bar and Hall.

Singer and occasional fire artist Linda Tacke recommends paying a visit to Lanesboro for the History Alive! Pop-up Plays. Jane Peck annually researches a different year in Lanesboro history, then brings it to life with a mass of performers the last two weekends in September. This time it's 1918; soldiers and nurses are coming back from the war and ragtime is all the rage. The 90-minute performance takes people through town to learn the history of landmark buildings; it ends with a community parade.
