"Total Eclipse of the Heart" topped the Billboard pop chart 35 years ago.
The song was written by producer Jim Steinman, perhaps best known for his collaborations with the singer Meat Loaf. Steinman came up with "Total Eclipse of the Heart" as he was working on a musical about Nosferatu, and says he originally envisioned it as a vampire love song.
"If anyone listens to the lyrics, they're really like vampire lines," he tells Playbill. "It's all about the darkness, the power of darkness, and love's place in [the] dark."
