It’s been 20 years since Destiny’s Child was No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart with “Bills, Bills, Bills.”

The song was the first chart-topper for the group. As music journalist Fred Bronson reports, the lyrics came from a story told by Kandi Burruss, who helped write the song.

“The whole story is [something that] happened with this guy I dated,” Burruss said. “He was driving my car and I'm putting gas in it, and he's [using] my cell phone."
