Forty years ago today, the Clash played a show at the Palladium in New York City. Bass player Paul Simonon has said that throughout the show, he was upset that the bouncers wouldn’t let members of the audience stand up and dance, so when the band finished its final song, “White Riot,” he smashed his guitar on the stage in frustration.
Photographer Pennie Smith captured the moment on film, and the image became iconic after it was used on the cover of the album “London Calling.”
