The Archies were No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart 50 years ago with “Sugar, Sugar.”
They never performed the song in front of a live audience, because they were cartoon characters in a Saturday morning TV show. The music was created by session players under the supervision of producer Don Kirshner.
Kirshner had previously worked with the Monkees, before they fired him. He once said he preferred working with the Archies, because they were a band that wouldn’t talk back.
