Twin Cities singer Joyann Parker is performing with her band tonight at the Dakota in Minneapolis.
Parker, who grew up in Wisconsin, told the Wisconsin Gazette in an interview last year that she started piano at age 4. But she didn't grow up listening to soul or the blues.
She says that came much later. She sang an Aretha Franklin song in a contest — and then was asked to join a blues band.
