In South Dakota, a research team is looking to develop palliative care programs specifically tailored to the state’s Native American communities.
Researchers are hoping to expand access to treatment on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud and Cheyenne River reservations. Rates of serious disease — like cancer and diabetes — in these communities are high, and it can be difficult for residents to access care.
MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with JR LaPlante, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and director of tribal relations with Avera Health, about the project.
