Weekend weather: Southern Minnesota gets a needed, soaking rain

Temperatures soar into the 70s and 80s next week

After a sunny and mild Friday, the weekend weather cools as a soaking rain moves across southern Minnesota. Temperatures rebound next week, with many parts of Minnesota likely to see their first 80s of the season.

Friday’s forecast

Friday morning started with near average temperatures in the 40s for most of the state, and the afternoon will also be very seasonable, with highs mostly in the 60s.

A few lingering clouds in northeastern Minnesota Friday morning continue to clear out by midday, and the rest of the state is already seeing widespread sunshine. Mostly sunny skies will prevail through the day, and winds will stay relatively light.

Overall, it will be a pleasant day!

Weekend rain

Already overnight Friday, more clouds start moving across the state, and southwestern Minnesota starts seeing showers move in early Saturday.

Rain and isolated thunderstorms spread across the state Saturday, although with the storm center staying south of the state, northern Minnesota will see only spotty showers.

Southern Minnesota is likely to get a soaking rain, with much of the southern half of the state seeing at least one-half inch of rain, and many places seeing an inch or more.

Most of the rain will fall on Saturday, but a few lingering showers are likely on Sunday before the weather system moves out.

The rain is very needed, because many locations in Minnesota are running an inch or more below average for May precipitation, and April was also drier than average.

70s and 80s next week

Temperatures remain seasonable Saturday, with highs mostly in the 60s. Sunday sees an interesting temperature pattern, with southern Minnesota likely to be cooler due to colder air behind the storm and lingering clouds, while northern Minnesota sees more sunshine and warmer weather.

Here is how that temperature trend looks for the Twin Cities with the rain over the weekend:

Warmer weather returns for the entire state by Monday, then temperatures likely stay 5 to 15 degrees above average for the rest of the week thanks to highs in the 70s and 80s, which would be the first 80s of the year for most of Minnesota. For portions of northern Minnesota, it would also be the first 70s since last fall.
