Updraft® - Minnesota Weather News

Warm and humid; chance PM thunderstorms

Thunderstorms likely Sunday night

Our average Twin Cities high temp is 82 degrees this time of year. We’ll probably reach the upper 80s this afternoon. Sunday highs will be well into the 80s in most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few spots in western Minnesota top 90 degrees. Highs in the 70s are expected along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Dew points will be in the sticky mid 60s and upper 60s in many locations this afternoon:

Dew points in the steamy 70s are expected in the southwest, while northeastern Minnesota enjoys comfortable dew points in the 50s.

Wind gusts of 18-26 mph are possible Sunday afternoon:

Plotted gusts are in knots, with 17 knots equal to almost 20 mph.

Higher wind gusts can be expected near any thunderstorms that develop.

Sunday afternoon and evening thunderstorm chances

Southwestern Minnesota may see a passing shower Sunday morning. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in parts of central and southern Minnesota plus western Wisconsin as we go through Sunday afternoon and evening. In the Twin Cities metro area our thunderstorm chance increases late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center shows a slight risk of severe weather Sunday and Sunday night in parts of southern Minnesota. Here’s the Twin Cities NWS discussion of the severe weather outlook:

Scattered severe thunderstorms will be possible in the slight risk area in southern Minnesota, which is shaded yellow. A marginal risk of severe weather (meaning an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible) covers most of the remainder of Minnesota plus western Wisconsin Sunday and Sunday night.
