Tuesday is beginning cold, with temperatures in the 30s in northern Minnesota and 40s in the southern half of the state.

Because some of the temperatures are near or even below freezing, all of northern Minnesota is under a frost advisory Tuesday until 9 a.m., with a corridor in western Minnesota under a freeze warning.

Temperatures do not improve much during the day, with highs only making it into the low to mid-50s for much of the state.

These highs are 15 to 25 degrees below average for early September. For another perspective, the average high and low for the Twin Cities on Sept. 8 are 75 and 56. Tuesday’s forecast high of 52 is even colder than our average low temperature.

The cold weather is thanks to a cold front that went through over the weekend, and a pattern that is now has Minnesota on the north (cold) side of active weather south of the state.

That same pattern is keeping the southern edge of the state under more cloud cover and occasional light rain, while northern Minnesota stays sunnier and dry.

Under clearer skies, northern Minnesota sees another cold night Tuesday with even more freeze warnings into Wednesday morning, then temperatures slowly start rising toward the weekend.

That extended forecast will be updated around 9 a.m.
