The strongest arctic front of winter blows into Minnesota Thursday. The core of winter’s coldest air arrives this weekend.

Snowy dusting Thursday

Light snow will spread across southern Minnesota as the arctic front approaches Thursday. Most areas will pick up less than an inch, but roads may quickly ice up with temperatures near zero. NOAA’s NAM 3 km resolution model depicts the area of light snow Thursday afternoon and evening.

* WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills. Wind chills as low as 50 below zero.

* WHERE...Portions of north central and northwest Minnesota and northeast and southeast North Dakota.

* WHEN...Until noon CST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes.

Wind chills between 30 and 40 degrees below zero will be common in central and southern Minnesota through this weekend.
