Get ready for the first intense heatwave of 2021.

Our blissfully pleasant early June air mass is about to be replaced by nasty July-like heat with tropical humidity. You’ll notice the heat begin to rise Thursday afternoon as highs climb through the 80s across most of Minnesota.

By Friday, intense heat pours into Minnesota from the west. Highs may reach 100 degrees in the Red River Valley and in other locations of western Minnesota. The Twin Cities and most of eastern Minnesota surge into the low to mid-90s.

Tropical air mass invasion

Thursday will still be fairly comfortable across Minnesota with dew points in the 50s. But you’ll feel the humidity surge by Friday. A stream of tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will push dew points into the upper 60s and low 70s by Friday and Saturday afternoon.

NOAA’s GFS model tracks the high dew point plume blowing in from the south. The loop below runs from Thursday to Saturday evening.
