The first round of snow really walloped central Minnesota into northern Wisconsin thus far. Many areas saw over 6 inches of snow, to near 10 with higher amounts with lake enhancement around Lake Superior. The winds are aligning perfectly out of the northeast over the ‘big lake’ to create optimal snowfall in the St. Louis Bay and along the Bayfield peninsula.

Some totals range from 12 in French River to 19 near Washburn (through early evening Monday). Those areas will continue to see snow tonight and get the second round of snow Tuesday. In total, over two days some places will see 18 to 24 inches.

While not as dramatic, we will see widespread snow of several plus inches across central and southern Minnesota into western Wisconsin Tuesday as the second round of snow comes out of Wyoming and Colorado overnight. There’s still a risk of a wintry mix in southeast Minnesota.

Totals for central and southern Minnesota will range from just 2 to 4 inches in the south to as much as another 6 to 8 inches in parts of east central Minnesota. The Twin Cities can expect a somewhat wide range of 3 to 7 inches. That lower end being in the south metro, while northern suburbs could get in on closer to 7. Minneapolis-St. Paul proper will likely be in the 4 to 6 inch range.

We’re then dealing with some pretty cold air for this late in February. Temperatures will range from 10 to 25 degrees colder than the normal. The normal high is in the low to mid 30s in the southern half of the state, but we’ll likely only see teens through Friday. Overnight lows will be subzero for most places.

Northwest Minnesota will see temperatures in the teens below zero some mornings with near 30 below zero wind chills. Wind chills everywhere will be frigid, though not quite as brutal.

We should see highs back in the 20s for part of the weekend and next week, just as we turn the page from February to March, should see highs in the 30s.
