Road conditions were improving Wednesday morning across Minnesota, in the wake of a winter storm that brought heavy snow to much of the state on Tuesday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported roads were still icy in parts of the state, including from the Twin Cities southeast toward Rochester and Winona.

The State Patrol said it responded to more than 350 crashes and more than 150 spinouts on Minnesota highways on Tuesday, including one crash that closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Elko New Market, south of the Twin Cities, for several hours.

The storm dropped 3 to 6 inches of snow in the Twin Cities metro area on Tuesday, with two-day snow totals well over a foot in parts of central and northern Minnesota. Some observers in northwest Wisconsin reported more than 2 feet of snow.

In the wake of the snow, below-normal temperatures and bitter-cold wind chills are in the forecast for the region for the next few days.

Snow emergencies are in effect in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, St. Louis Park, Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park among other Minnesota communities.

Those declarations mean a variety of parking restrictions are in place to allow snowplow crews to more easily clear streets.
