Blizzard warnings in Northwest Minnesota, winter weather advisories across the state

A few lucky spots hit 10 degrees Wednesday afternoon, but that’s still 22 degrees below normal for the Twin Cities. Hopefully you’ve cleared the driveway, sidewalk and steps because more snow is on the way Thursday, though it will be significantly less than Tuesday. Check out my 

 for the final snow totals around the region. 

Overnight temperatures will dip below zero again for most of Minnesota Wednesday night into early Thursday. 

Thursday will again be chilly and well below normal. Highs will mainly be in the teens in the Twin Cities and the southeast, with single digits north.

Snow will graze the southern third or so of Minnesota Thursday on the northern edge of a bigger storm system affecting states mainly to our south and southeast. 

In the Twin Cities, we can expect about 1 inch of snow, but just south and southeast could see some 2 to 3-inch amounts. Even some southern suburbs could close in on 2 inches. It will again be a rather light, fluffy snow. 

Highs Friday will be cold again for one more day before warming up.

By Saturday we’re looking at temperatures returning to normal, near freezing.

Next week will bring more consistent warm temperatures just in time for March. Highs should be in the 30s most of next week and two-thirds of the models give us a couple of days in the 40s even, possibly as early as Monday or Tuesday.

If you caught my conversation with Cathy Wurzer on Minnesota Now, I discussed how February is yet another colder than normal month — our second in a row. 

February will likely end up about 6 degrees colder than normal. January was 5.5 degrees colder than normal. We haven’t had two consecutive colder than normal months since the autumn of 2020. 

Interestingly, like January, while chilly, a February that’s 6 degrees below normal would only have been about 3 degrees below normal historically. This February will rank in the top 36 percent coldest Februarys — nowhere near a top 10 or top 20 even. We’ll rank somewhere in the 50th to 60th coldest Februarys (of 149 years). This February would have been nearly normal historically, a once every other year or once every three-year occurrence.

One (or two, if you’re in central Minnesota) snowfalls are done and — hopefully — cleared away. It will be another cold, subzero night Wednesday, and we have more snow on the way for parts of southern Minnesota on Thursday. Chilly temperatures persist through Friday.
