Wednesday’s winds gusted to over 50 mph across Minnesota. That’s the likely culprit for the incredible photo at the top of this post from our friends at KARE11 News.
It’s called an ice shove. These ice shoves are common on Mille Lacs during spring ice break up with high winds. The force of the winds creates friction on the ice surface. The momentum generated can shove massive amounts of thick ice slabs onto shore and even damage buildings like this one in 2020.
A bit milder
Wednesday brings a mix of sun and a few clouds with slightly milder but still seasonably chilly air to Minnesota. Highs Wednesday approach 50 degrees in the south, with mostly 40s across Minnesota.

70s late next week?
There are signs of much warmer weather again later next week. NOAA’s GFS model cranks out highs in the 70s again a week from Thursday, May 5.
Hang in there, Minnesota.
