Expect triple-digit heat indices Tuesday with relief on Wednesday. Thunderstorms are possible, mainly north, overnight into Wednesday as a cool front drops temperatures and dew points temporarily.
Extreme heat Tuesday
An excessive heat warning is in effect Tuesday from 1 p.m. through 8 p.m. for the Twin Cities metro area. Heat advisories are in effect elsewhere in southern Minnesota.
High temperatures will be well into the 90s with some places possibly near 100 Tuesday afternoon.
The combination of high dew points (70 degrees or more) and the heat will create heat indices of 100 to 108 degrees for much of southern Minnesota.

Storms possible Tuesday night
A cool front will bring some relief Wednesday and Thursday and will touch off some showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night into early Wednesday.
The best chance for storms and possible severe weather will be across northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. There’s a slight risk (level 2 of 5) of severe storms.
Cooler, then hotter again
Temperatures Wednesday will be a bit cooler behind the cool front, mainly in the 80s.
Dew points will drop from the 60s and 70s in the morning Wednesday into the much more comfortable 50s by afternoon. That drier air will stick around into Thursday.
Friday will see a return to temperatures of 90 degrees or more along with muggier air.
