Snow stays south Saturday; arctic cold hangs on into early next week

It was great to see the sunshine on Friday, but a storm system is spinning clouds over many areas Saturday. Northern Minnesota will see the most sunshine Saturday afternoon.

Cold temperatures and wind chills

Saturday morning temps were in the teens below zero and 20s below zero in much of the northern half of Minnesota. Wind chills in the coldest areas were in the 20s and 30s below zero.

A wind chill advisory continues until 3 p.m. Saturday in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota:

Saturday high temps will be below zero in northwestern, north-central and west-central Minnesota. The Twin Cities metro area, southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin could creep briefly into the double-digits above zero for afternoon highs.

For perspective, our average Twin Cities high temperature is 24 degrees this time of year.

Low temps late Saturday night and early Sunday will range from 20s below zero in far northern Minnesota to single digits below zero in the metro area and southern Minnesota:

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to be around 4 above zero on Monday, then around 11 above zero Tuesday, followed by mid-teens Wednesday and Thursday and upper teens on Friday.

Snow stays south Saturday

A low-pressure system is bringing snow to much of Iowa and far southern Wisconsin Saturday. A combination of winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings cover much of Iowa and parts of far southern Wisconsin.

Far southern Minnesota will continue to see periods of snow today and into early Saturday evening. A winter weather advisory has been posted for far southern Minnesota Saturday:

The advisory continues until 6 p.m. in Rock, Nobles and Jackson County of southwestern Minnesota, and until 10 p.m. from Martin County eastward to Fillmore County. The winter weather advisory continues until 3 a.m. Sunday in Houston County in far southeastern Minnesota.

Snow depths

There’s plenty of snow cover across most of Minnesota right now. Here’s the latest snow depth map from the Minnesota State Climatology Office:

The official Twin Cities snow depth is 11 inches, but parts of the metro area have more than one foot of snow cover.

The purple-shaded areas in northeastern Minnesota have 18 inches or more of snow cover, with snow depths of 30 inches or more in the lightest shade of purple that covers portions of Lake County and Cook County.
