Icy conditions spread as temps drop; weekend weather looks drama-free

Travel has been hazardous and vehicles have been stranded in western Minnesota due to blizzard conditions. Winds will diminish gradually in those areas and the blizzard warnings are due to expire at various times Wednesday morning.

Winter weather advisories for less-severe winter conditions should expire by noon in northern Minnesota but continue until Wednesday evening in northwestern Wisconsin.

Cold northwest wind

Temperatures are falling as that northwest wind blows much colder air across the state. As temperatures fall below freezing, any standing water from the rain and snowmelt will freeze. Sidewalks, driveway aprons and near curb areas of residential streets will become especially icy.

Twin Cities getting icy

Weather stations in the Twin Cities measured around 1 inch of rain. The precipitation has been ending as some light flurries with little or no accumulation. Falling temperatures will freeze any standing water into dangerous ice.

Wind and traffic seem to be keeping major metro area roads mainly dry.

Cold Thursday

Colder air will continue to blow into the state for Thursday but the fierce winds will have abated. Highs will be from the teens to low 20s. The Twin Cities should have a high around 19.

Warmer-than-normal weekend ahead

After a cold start to the day, Friday will become less chilly with near-normal afternoon high temperatures.

The weekend will be warmer than normal and free of weather drama again. Look for highs on Saturday and Sunday in the 20s and 30s with some low 40s possible in the south.

Cooler again next week

The six to 10-day temperature outlook for next Monday through Friday anticipates cooler-than-normal temperatures across Minnesota and most of Wisconsin.

With chilly weather expected across all of the West at that time, we might continue on the cold side beyond next week as the weather pattern advance eastward.
