The first round of snow will dwindle to a bit of a midday break before more significant snow develops late Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday. Many areas will receive over a foot of additional snowfall.
From round one to round two of snow
Winter storm warnings remain in effect for much of southern Minnesota with blizzard warnings going into effect Wednesday afternoon for portions of Minnesota, including the western Twin Cities metro.
We picked up about 4 to 5 inches of snow for most areas of southern Minnesota in the first round of snowfall. You can see what’s fallen so far here:
Snowfall reportsSnowfall will continue across southern Minnesota Wednesday though more lightly so. We’re in a lull for much of the midday Wednesday in the Twin Cities and central Minnesota.

Look for the second round of more significant snow to fill in from south to north through the day into Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
In the Twin Cities, we can expect snowfall to pick back up in earnest by late afternoon and evening Wednesday.
The winds increase Wednesday as well, with gusts over 40 mph and even over 50 mph in west central and southwest Minnesota. This will create blizzard conditions.
Additional snowfall totals Wednesday afternoon into Thursday will be substantial with some places receiving more than a foot of additional snowfall.
Most accumulating snowfall will be done by the late morning or early afternoon Thursday. This will bring storm total snowfall to more than 18 to 20 inches for some spots across southern Minnesota by Thursday afternoon.
Snow followed by brief chill and another storm system?
The snow will be followed by a brief blast of cold which will drop temperatures below zero statewide Thursday night into Friday morning.
Highs Friday will be mainly in the single digits to the low teens with a few spots in northwest Minnesota remaining subzero.
We’ll warm back up over the weekend into next week. We are looking at potentially another storm system Sunday night into Monday which may bring rain to southern Minnesota and heavy snow north.
