Our record seasonal snowfall is running off into area rivers this week. It’s creating river conditions around the state that are both scary and beautiful. MPR News editor Andrew Krueger took this video of the St. Louis River at Jay Cooke State Park near Duluth:
Several significant rivers are forecast to hit major flood stages into next weekend. You can check updated specific river levels and forecasts here.
Here’s a look at some select river forecasts.
St. Croix River at Stillwater
The St. Croix River at Stillwater is rising steadily. The current forecast projects a rise of about another foot to 89.5 feet. That would be the seventh-highest crest on record for the eastern Twin Cities city.

Mississippi River at St. Paul
The Mississippi River is also rising. The river is forecast to rise almost 5 feet to 18.5 feet in St. Paul by this weekend. That is major flood stage, and would be the 13th-highest crest on record at St. Paul.
Crow River at Delano
Folks around Delano and along the Crow River west of the Twin Cities know what often happens this time of year. The Crow River at Delano is currently projected to rise to 19.2 feet Tuesday. This is major flood stage and would mark the ninth-highest crest on record.
Red River at Fargo
The shallow flood-prone Red River Valley is used to annual spring flooding. The forecast for the Red River at Fargo, N.D., projects a rise of almost 12 feet to 33.2 feet by next Monday. That’s major flood stage and would be the 13th-highest crest on record.
More rain this week
Our next weather systems this week will bring more precipitation to Minnesota Wednesday and Thursday. Many areas in eastern Minnesota could see another inch of precipitation by this weekend.
That’s not good news for rivers that are already rising fast.
