Canadian wildfire smoke is prompting more air quality alerts through early Friday. Scattered showers sweep across Minnesota Thursday with cooler conditions Friday. Sunshine and warm, dry weather return for the weekend.
Smoke and air quality update
Air quality is unhealthy already in western Minnesota Thursday morning and is expected to remain that way much of the day.
The forecast for Thursday lowers air quality for most of Minnesota. Much of northern and western Minnesota will see unhealthy conditions while the Twin Cities and St. Cloud will see moderate air quality.
Our latest clipper system and cold front has brought more smoke with it from the northwest.

Scattered showers then cooler; weekend’s nice
That same system bringing in more smoke is also bringing scattered rain showers Thursday into Thursday night.
Rainfall amounts should be relatively light, especially in areas where we need rainfall the least in southern Minnesota.
Most of Minnesota will see highs in the 60s to near 70 Thursday. Northwestern Minnesota will see 50s behind the cold front.
Overnight, look for chilly temperatures with 40s south and 30s north into early Friday.
Friday will be cool statewide with highs in the 50s and low 60s and a mix of clouds and sun. A few showers are still possible northeast.
We should see smoke diminish from the skies late Friday into Saturday but some could return Sunday into Monday, especially north.
The weekend will be warmer with sunshine returning along with dry weather.
