Get ready for the hottest week of summer, Minnesota.
A major heat wave is building into the Upper Midwest. A ridge of high pressure will amplify in the upper atmosphere across the central United States this week. Minnesota will ride the top of this heat dome.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Forecast System model shows the bulge in the upper winds around 18,000 feet above ground level building this week. The loop below runs between Monday and Thursday.
High temperatures will reach the mid-90s to 100 degrees in parts of South Dakota and possibly Minnesota this week.

Dew points will climb through the 60s and could reach the tropical 70-degree mark in the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota by Wednesday afternoon. The forecast model loop below shows projected dew point values between Tuesday and Wednesday evening.
Highs will approach but probably fall short of record levels in the Twin Cities and our region this week. Here are some record highs for the Twin Cities this week:

Slightly cooler weather blows in this weekend with highs in the 80s south.

Monday’s storms dropped large hail and caused some wind damage.

Dennison [Goodhue Co, MN] Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network reports hail of half dollar size (M1.25 inch) at 3:30 PM CDT -- Shredded leaves.
2 ENE Hudson [St. Croix Co, WI] Public reports Tstm Wnd Dmg at 2:46 PM CDT -- Two mature, shallow rooted, trees down across residential street.
2 S Rosemount [Dakota Co, MN] Public reports Hail of half dollar size (M1.25 inch) at 3:00 PM CDT -
2 E Rosemount [Dakota Co, MN] Public reports Hail of ping pong ball size (M1.50 inch) at 3:02 PM CDT
